Like many of you, I manage the travel miles and points accounts for my entire family. My favourite and up until recently, frequently used airline loyalty program is Aeroplan. After all, Air Canada is the largest airline in Canada and a founding member of Star Alliance, which includes Air New Zealand, Lufthansa, United Airlines, and many others. In addition to Star Alliance carriers, Air Canada partners with a number of major airlines that aren’t Star Alliance like Cathay Pacific, which we fly with regularly to Asia.
Similar to other airline loyalty programs, Aeroplan points expire if you do not accumulate or redeem Aeroplan points for a period of 12 consecutive months. The good news is there are four easy ways to earn points thus prevent your Aeroplan points from expiring—without having to travel.
1. Sign up for an Aeroplan credit card

Earn points on everyday purchases with an Aeroplan credit card, and earn extra points in popular categories such as gas, grocery, dining and travel purchases with eligible cards. Plus, earn twice the miles when you present your Aeroplan membership at Aeroplan partners and retailers and pay with your Aeroplan credit card!
Aeroplan credit cards are co-branded with American Express, CIBC and TD Bank, and they are available to Canadian citizens only. Look for the credit card that offers a sign up bonus for new members!
2. Shop with Aeroplan retail partners and eStore

Aeroplan members in Canada can earn points from local partners like Home Hardware, Toyota Canada, and UPS, and online retailers through the Aeroplan eStore. Online retailers range from Aldo, Apple store, Chapters, Ebay, Gap, Sephora, Sony, The Bay, and so many more.
Keep an eye out for special Aeroplan promotions throughout the year!
3. Complete a survey
AskingCanadians is an online research community dedicated to providing their members with an opportunity to make their voices heard – and influence today’s leading brands.
Your opinions and time are valuable so AskingCanadians will reward you Aeroplan points for every survey you complete.
4. Buy or transfer points
You can buy Aeroplan points or transfer points from one Aeroplan account to another online instantly. There is a fee of 2 cents per mile, so this should be your last resort when you find yourself in a bind.
You are limited to 5 transactions transferring points either from or to your account per year. The minimum amount is 1,000 Aeroplan points, and the maximum amount is 999,999 Aeroplan points in a single transaction.
The Bottom Line
Earning Aeroplan points without actually flying can be just as lucrative as stepping aboard that aircraft.
