When I think of Fiji, I think of white sand beaches, crystal clear water, palm trees, beautiful sunsets, and tropical drinks with little paper umbrellas. Fiji was all of that and more!
In fact, our week in Fiji has climbed to the top of my “Best Beach Family Vacation” List!
Our arrival at the Nadi International Airport was both a surprise and an amazing experience. We and everyone else were met by a band of local musicians singing and welcoming us to Fiji. I’ve never felt more welcomed in a foreign country!
Since we arrived late in the evening, we spent the first two nights at Mercure Nadi located near the bustling town centre. The location gave us an opportunity to explore the “city” and indulge in some local shopping and dining. During our exploration, we found a hole-in-the-wall massage parlor where Radwin and I had one of the best reflexology treatments ever! I wish I could share the name of the parlor but they’re not on Google or any social media.
Our next five nights were spent at the Sheraton Fiji Golf & Beach Resort on Denarau Island. Our time at the Sheraton Fiji was the true definition of relaxation! We did nothing but relax on pool loungers, hung out in the pools when it got too hot, drank too many frozen cocktails (minus the paper umbrellas), and ate until we could barely walk.
We did leave the resort several times. We went to Port Denarau Marina twice, once to stretch our legs and to browse the shops, and a second time for dinner.
We, my parents included, did a half day tour with Zip Fiji and boy was it fun! The tour includes 16 action-packed zip lines, a guided cave tour and history lesson (not sure how much of the story is true though!), lunch and refreshments, and transportation from and to your hotel in an air-conditioned shuttle. Not going to lie, the hike was strenuous but completely worth it! The zip lines were super fun, the views were spectacular, and our guides were phenomenal!
The Sabeto Hot Spring and Mud Pool is also a fun activity for the entire family. It is an outdoor hot spring where you first coat yourself in mud then bake in the sun until it dries. You then wash off in the first hot spring pool then the second clearer water pool then the next and so on until you’ve taken a “bath” in all four hot spring pools. It was quite the experience even though Jordan was NOT impressed with the mud. The attendant was super nice and helped take a ton of photos on our phones while we baked in the sun.
It is said that mud baths are therapeutic. The heat of the mud helps to increase blood flow and stimulate the immune system, while the minerals in the mud are believed to have a range of healing properties like drawing out impurities from the skin, exfoliating dead skin cells, and easing muscle pain and tension.
We ended our mud bath treatment with a full body massage in a shared common room. You know it was one of the most relaxing massages you’ve had when you find yourself asleep on the massage table!
On our second last day in Fiji, I woke up at sunrise and snuck out to cross off a bucket list item by myself. (I didn’t really sneak out; Radwin knew of my plans. I was just very careful about not waking him and the kids up so early.) I went skydiving and it was incredible!
It was sad to leave at the end of the week; I may have shed a tear or two. Given the chance, we would return to Fiji in a heartbeat!
