This year I decided to spend my birthday weekend at Cold Lake, a city in Alberta's "Lakeland" district, 300km northeast of Edmonton, near the Alberta-Saskatchewan provincial border. It was our first time to Cold Lake, for all of us. The city is aptly named after the lake nearby. The water is, as you guessed it, cold!

We were also celebrating Jordan and Evelyn return to school while navigating the "new normal", Radwin's return to work soon after six months of staying at home, and my starting a new job today! Good things come in threes, right?
With restrictions recently eased for indoor recreation including swimming pools, I picked Best Western Cold Lake Inn for their pool and waterslide, which was a huge hit with the kids. I tried my luck at the VLT lounge attached to the properly but sadly, I did not win.

We enjoyed a leisurely but chilly morning stroll along the Cold Lake Marina. The boardwalk is very charming and leads to the end of the pier with beautiful views of the lake. The kids enjoyed peeking into boats and pointing out the cool ones. It looks like the old buildings facing the marina were restored and landscaped, giving the area a Victorian “Hallmark movie” feel.
On the north end of Cold Lakes is Kinosoo Beach, one of Canada’s Top 25 Beaches as named by Canadian Geographic Magazine. The beach features a three-block stretch of soft white sand, a splash park, beach volleyball and basketball courts, floating dock, kids zipline, full-service concession and walking paths.
The kids were hoping to zipline into the lake but typical Alberta, the weather took a dive this past weekend to strong and cold wind. We dipped our toes into the water and it was freezing! Hence the empty beach and jackets.
We took a different route to drive home, south through Elk Point and Vermilion, which I highly recommend. It was so scenic and the endless fields of corn looked like fields of gold!
