Hard Luck Canyon

Today, we decided to explore our gorgeous province by taking a relatively short two-hour drive to Hard Luck Canyon for a waterfall hike. Carved by Hard Luck Creek through the sandstone layers of the Paskapoo Formation some 11,000 years ago, Hard Luck Canyon is a unique geological formation of sandstone banks and cliffs.

The 0.8km loop trail is an easy 10-minute walk through the forest and across a bridge that spans Beaver Creek Falls and provides a great view of the canyon. There is a series of stairs leading to the canyon floor, a picturesque spot for a rest and views of the two-tiered waterfall.

The canyon floor is massive and covered in bright green moss and rocks, including large rocks that you could climb on. The kiddos loved that but be careful walking around as we found the rocks can be slippery!

Despite the heavy rainfall yesterday, the canyon was dry today so no waterfall but the shallow creek provided the perfect place for wading and exploring.

The area is an excellent picnic spot, with numerous picnic tables and several garbage/recycle bins throughout under tree shades. There were too many mosquitoes about so we opted to have our picnic in the trunk of our SUV.
